Description: This highly significant inscription takes the form of a funeral eulogy composed by the son of Murdia's first marriage. It has attracted some attention from students of the laudatio as a genre, as well as those primarily interested in social issues. There is in fact reference to the function of the inscription as a laudatio in line 21. It is not a laudatio priuata pro contione (funus indictiuum), nor a laudatio publica pro contione (funus publicum), both very conspicuous public events taking place at the rostra in the forum, but, as Durry suggests, this appears to be a laudatio delivered amongst intimates at the pyre or tomb. This is an event never expressly mentioned in the ancient literature, but rather inferred from the existence of the laudationes for Murdia and 'Turia'. Only in the case of the Murdia is this product expressly called a laudatio.
